2014 Leaders Against Pain Training Program:  Imagine. Prepare. Inspire!
The National Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain Association is pleased to announce its 2014 Leaders Against Pain Conference to be held October 23-26 in Salt Lake City at the University of Utah Conference Center.  The training teaches participants skills in media, advocacy, and leadership to facilitate a support and education group, develop awareness campaigns, and how to participate in state and national events for fibromyalgia (FM) and chronic pain illnesses.

Who are Leaders Against Pain?
They are people with chronic pain who want to make changes in the way their illness is viewed by the medical community, legislators, government agencies and, more personally, their family, friends and other loved ones.  They want to be a voice for their suffering and offer hope to others who struggle with the same invisible chains that hold them hostage.  They are advocates.

What are the core elements of Leaders Against Pain Scholarship Program?
The highly interactive Leaders Against Pain Scholarship Training Program teaches skills that address:
  • Leading an effective support group
  • Advocating on behalf of people with fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions.
  • Creating fibromyalgia and chronic pain awareness events
  • Learning how to use media, advocacy and leadership skills to raise awareness and make changes in the chronic pain community including:
  1. Legislative actions that affect chronic pain access to healthcare
  2. Medical education to increase healthcare professionals knowledge of fibromyalgia and other chronic pain condition
  3. Advocating for more scientific research funding for fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions
  • Opportunities to meet and interact with others who are have a similar vision while gaining advanced skills with the Leaders Against Pain Action Network
How does the Leaders Against Pain Training Program accomplish these goals?
Personal advocacy begins with knowledge of your story and how to convey it in order to motivate desired actions and outcomes.  Developing a participant’s story of her or his journey with FM or other chronic pain condition is the first step in being a voice for themselves and millions of others.  This done by:
  • Media training including TV, radio and journalistic interview tactics.  This part of the program will be taught by seasoned professionals and includes videotaping of story presentations, real life interview interactions (Q&A), how to expand or deflate a story for a particular time period, and becoming familiar and comfortable in media situations.
  • Legislative advocacy:  Professional trainers will lead participants through several types of legislative education including how to make congressional visits, both at state and national levels.
  • How to develop and deliver an advocacy “ask,” such as “When can we expect action on better healthcare for people in pain?”
  • Creating local and state chronic pain awareness events and then how to promote those events through media interview skills.
This program is intended for newcomers as well as veterans to patient advocacy. It teaches skills for advocating on behalf of millions of people for faster diagnosis, better treatments, more research funding and ultimately a cure for these conditions.

Leaders Against Pain (LAP) is a scholarship training program, and participants will be chosen from an application process posted on the Leaders Against Pain website (leadersagainstpain.net).  By becoming a Leader Against Pain you become part of the Leaders Against Pain Action Network, which provides on-going opportunities to network and engage with national advocacy events, and gain advanced skills to help you tell your story and make changes in the perception and advancement of issues facing people with fibromyalgia and chronic pain.
